Hawks and falcons are as much a part of the tradition of chivalry as swords and armour. These magnificent birds represented the knight's responsibilities, not as a warrior, but as an honourable manager surrounded by strong, capable individuals who would not tolerate disrespect.

The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest member of the animal kingdom! They can reach speeds from 320 kilometres an hour (200 mph)! These birds aren’t just fast though, they’re also incredibly durable! It’s believed that the Peregrine travels between continents to mate or find food!

We unfortunately end this week with some exceptionally sad news. Over the last 2 days, 150 vultures have been poisoned in two separate incidents (1 in Kruger National Park and the other Chobe Botswana). These killings were aimed at targeting vultures for muti.

Happy Vulture Awareness Day! Did you know that Turkey vultures urinate down their legs?! This is called urohydrosis and it helps to cool the vultures off during hot weather. When the fluids in the waste evaporate, it cools the blood vessels in the feet keeping them cool!

How close do you want to get? Our Closest Encounter lets you get as close as possible to various birds of prey! This encounter includes hanging out with several species of raptors on your glove, and experiencing a Hawk Walk!
