#Canada: #CFWIJ is astonished at Globalnews.ca decision to lay off at least four talented women journalists. Including award-winning Rachel Gilmore whose reporting for the outlet led to death threats. We stand in solidarity with those let go & demand an explanation from Corus Communications.

Some people will never miss a chance to be cruel. But while they spent their evenings sending hate mail and furiously tweeting to get our attention, we were surrounded by people who love us and support us in the real world. A message to these twisted, obsessive folks:

Some first-rate journalists lost their jobs this week. Some people took the opportunity to gloat. Democracy gets a bit weaker than it was before.

I am wondering how the fuck everyone in #cdnmedia can stand around watching a fellow journalist get ripped apart piece by piece and no one says a damn thing. The silence is defeaning and I see the plight of women in journalism doesn't mean shit to powerful well-known journalists

I'm quite surprised why something as simple as this is so hard to understand. This is the disconnect we keep talking about. Do we stand around a public square as silent spectators and let women be physically abused or bullied? How is the digital "public sphere" different?

Many of my excellent journalist colleagues who lost their jobs at Global in the last week are being harassed and taunted by spineless, anonymous social media sludge. These journalists should and will find new and worthwhile employment and have futures. The bullies are just that.

Rachel Gilmore aka Rachel Gilmore has been savagely attacked especially. Others like Teresa Wright, Irelyne Lavery and Heidi Lee have also faced vitriol. Some have called for their deaths. It is horrible. But social media sites like Twitter permit this, unfortunately.

On International Women’s Day 2023, hundreds of community organizations from across Canada have signed a statement declaring that gender equality cannot be achieved without supporting, celebrating, and uplifting trans women.

Global has posted a number of new jobs after laying off seven women (including Rachel and me), five of whom were part of the national online team.

The New Brunswick Government just turned its back on trans and gender diverse students. Anti-trans rhetoric is on the rise, and the progress we’ve made is at risk. It will only escalate from here, if we don’t #Act4QueerSafety. We must resist rising hate. Lives are at stake.

Also Irelyne Lavery, who took over our TikTok while I was in Tunisia and helped bolster our content after that. Global never made the TikTok gig its own position, so we all worked on these videos on top of our daily reporting duties. It was a grind but so fun :)
