#OnThisDay 1607 Hugh O'Neill & 90 of his followers left Ireland from Rathmullan, Donegal in what became known as "The Flight of the Earls". They hoped to build an army on the continent & return to Ireland. They never saw home again. O'Neill died in Rome in 1616 #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1939 Willie Murphy from Cork was the first RAF Bomber pilot to be shot down in WW2. Also shot down that day was Larry Slattery (pic) from Tipperary. Slattery became the longest serving POW of WW2 & spent time in the famous Stalag Luft III camp. #Ireland #History #WW2

#OnThisDay 1939 Montague Hulton-Harrop was the RAF's first fighter pilot casualty at the Battle of Barking Creek. He was shot down in a friendly fire incident by John Freeborn & Dublin-man Flying Officer Vincent Byrne (Pic). Both men were later acquitted. #Ireland #History #WW2

#OnThisDay 1919 The IRA ambushed 15 British soldiers at Wesleyan Church, Fermoy, Cork. Pte William Jones was killed & Liam Lynch wounded. This was the first fatal attack on British soldiers since the Rising. The next day the British Army ransacked Fermoy. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1948 At the Ottawa Conference, Taoiseach John A. Costello declared that the Irish Free State would become a republic and end its membership of the British Commonwealth. Twenty-six Irish counties became a republic the following year. #Ireland #History
