During WW2, Jadwiga Dziekońska was a resistance liaison and distributed underground press in the Białystok region. In 1942, she helped free her comrades from a Gestapo prison.

#OTD in 1943, she was shot dead by the Germans during an arrest attempt.

Grzegorz Przemyk's funeral took place #OTD in 1983.

Thousands of Poles attended it, and apart from mourning the teenager, manifested their opposition to the communist regime, responsible for Grzegorz's death.

Stanisław Kopański, born #OTD in 1895, lost an eye in the Polish-Bolshevik War.

During WW2, he evacuated to France and was deployed to Syria to become the commander of the Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade, which made a name for itself in the Siege of Tobruk.

Józef Stojewski-Rybczyński was a Polish artillery officer who fought the invading Wehrmacht in September 1939, and then evacuated West to take part in the Battle of France.

He later joined Gen. Anders’ 2nd Corps, fought in the Battle of #MonteCassino , and was KIA #OTD in 1944.
