Tadeusz Hollender, Polish poet and satirist of exceptional integrity, in 1930s scoffed at bigotry and prejudice, in 1939 refused to sign a praise of Soviet annexation of Lvov, and in 1942 made fools of the Germans in a Home Army PSYOP.

The Gestapo killed him 31 May 1943.

In 1942 in Zgierz, Polish town annexed by the German Reich, Józef Mierzyński killed two Gestapo officers to escape.

The Germans retaliated with executing 100 prisoners (including Józef’s wife) in front of 6,000 local people. Józef was eventually caught and murdered in 1942.
