The dam in this image is know as “The Fortification”, & it used to hold back a huge underground lake. Upon discovering this in 1837, the Victorians smashed the dam & drained the lake, before going on to explore the recesses of the system with only candles for light! 🕯😮

We often have visitors asking whether there’re small spaces or tight squeezes in the cave. The cave is very open, and most of the time you’re walking along open passages as seen in this photo. There are 2 short stoops, but the passages are very wide. There is no crawling. #Caves

This limestone dam held back a substantial underground lake until 1837, when James Farrer drained the lake, going on to explore 1/2km of previously undiscovered passages with only candles for light! Today you can retrace his footsteps on an underground adventure! 🕯😮 #Yorkshire

A group of redstarts on the trail! Redstarts are immediately identifiable by their bright orange-red tails, which they often quiver. Redstarts 'bob' in a very robin-like manner, but spend little time at ground level. RSPB RSPB England
