When businesses ignore accessibility, they’re not just excluding people — they’re turning away a huge portion of their market. Accessibility isn’t just the right thing to do. It’s smart business. (2/2)

#TuesdayThoughts: Did you know that in Canada, the average household with one (or more) people with disabilities face an average of $1700 per month in extra expenses? With lower levels of employment and often lower salaries when employed, that's a tough pill to swallow!

2️⃣Plain, accessible language... ...helps everyone. Short sentences. Active voice. Fewer acronyms (or explaining them once). Simpler words. Using plain language saves time, reduces confusion, and makes information easier to understand for all staff — not just disabled employees.

3️⃣ Meeting notes or transcripts Providing written notes or transcripts from meetings is a simple, no-cost adjustment. It helps neurodivergent and cognitively impaired people process information at their own pace — and gives everyone a clear record to refer back to. 🗒️

4️⃣Optional work-from-home options Offering remote or home working doesn’t cost anything — but it can make a huge difference. It cuts out commute stress, saves energy, and lets people work in spaces that already meet their needs. Better focus. More flexibility. Same great work.

5️⃣ Start the conversation about adjustments Starting the conversation about workplace adjustments removes pressure from disabled employees to constantly advocate for themselves. Even one line in a meeting invite like “Let us know if you need any adjustments” makes a difference.

Another way to make your company's social media more accessible is to ensure you caption your videos. With most platforms offering auto-generated captions with editing ability, it's worth the time to correct any errors to ensure that your messaging is received as you intended.

Another great way to keep your company's social media posts more accessible is to not overload your content with emojis! Using many emojis throughout the text of your posts can become confusing and make it difficult to read so use them sparingly.👍

Incorporating hashtags into your company's social media is a great way to stay on trend. But did you know there's a more accessible way? Try using Camel Case - capitalize the first letter of each word #LikeThis for easier readability. This small change can have a big impact!

Our final tip to make your company's social media more accessible is to not use all caps. All caps can add emphasis but isn't accessible. Trust your message - you don't need to "yell" for emphasis and more people will read and understand your content.
