Testing the qualities of our samples...Streak, hardness, colour, magnetic and uses. These are things I don't have the resources for at school, and without the science center, my students may never have had the opportunity to participate. Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2 Ontario Science Centre
Our rocks and minerals workshop is about to begin! Kids are ready to show what they know. Ty Naomi and Trevor for hosting us. Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2
Ranchdale grade 45s are back at the Ontario Science Centre. We're here for a workshop on rocks and minerals, but are enjoying the hot one in the meantime. A shame that it's going to close... π Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2
Applying our knowledge of congruency as we build 6 trapezoidal walls for our wind turbines. These will be assembled into a tall hexagonal tower that our turbine will sit on top of. The Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2 TOES_TDSB
We're making water wheels for our energy unit. To make the circular part, we've sandwiched 2 layers of popsicle sticks, too thick to use our cardboard circle cutter. To the drill press circle jig! SB is the first as she uses the bit to cut her circle. Ranchdale PS
It's painting day in our pinch pot pottery group. We've discussed earth tones and the colours of the rainbow. Ss are layering colours lightest to darkest. Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2 TOES_TDSB
Getting ready for Earth day! 210 cedar cookies cut for Mandela art. Oh my workshop smells FANTASTIC! The wood is left over from a cedar tree my dad needed to cut back. Respecting the trees spirit by giving it purpose. Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2 TOES_TDSB
Ty to Ms Velliaris for hosting the grade 4s as we continue our exploration of the rock cycle. Ss went on a sort hunt and were tasked to sort a large collection of rocks into sedimentary and not sedimentary. Then resort those as well! Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2 TOES_TDSB
Making conglomerate sedimentary rock. Large pebbles compacted together form the base of our sandstone for later. Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2 TOES_TDSB
The grade 4s are exploring the process of sedimentation and compaction in the rock cycle. We started with plasticine pebbles and compacted them over 8 million years... 10 folds... Once sliced, the layers are beautiful! Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2 TOES_TDSB
I'm just about everywhere in Ranchdale lately. I'm working with the other grade 3 class for their indigenous peoples unit, also making pinch pots. They are a smaller group, so I can give them a bit more focus. Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2
Ty to Ms Adams and Ms Thomas for hosting a galaxy slime party. Grade 45s help the kindies read the instructions on how to make slime. A messy but extremely important integration of reading and science. Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2
We're exploring sedimentary rock formation. Ss are creating a conglomerate and once pressed and sliced will see the layers of their sample. Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2 TOES_TDSB
The grade 3s are doing a cross curricular activity by working with clay to make Wendat style pinch pots. The results are quite good! Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2 TOES_TDSB
Trudy finds a Rock. A beautiful indigenous story about the power of the stone and how our First Nations friends and families honour the stones of Mother Earth. Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2
Special thanks to Ms Velliaris for hosting the grade 45s. We're studying rocks and minerals. Today she reads 'Trudy finds a Rock'. Students are gifted with a grandfather stone to keep. Ranchdale PS Learning Centre 2
Naseem let's us know the drafting process doesn't need to be neat and tidy. Our students are very kind as the say it's nice and her cursive is lovely... π
