The Scripps Acoustic Ecology Lab (Scripps Acoustic Ecology ) is interested in investigating what top predators (like cetaceans) are in Southern California, what prey they are foraging on, and the underlying physical oceanography that is informing the presence of these marine animals.
.Alba Solsona uses 15+ years of data (!) showing less beaked whale activity with sonar at daily & annual timescales. Hattaras whales rarely hear sonar & likely respond at MUCH lower levels than California, where sonar is common. Important results at #ESOMM2022 w/ Scripps Acoustic Ecology
Do you speak whale? ๐ Scripps PhD student Natalie Posdaljian (Natalie Posdaljian) does. Working with Scripps Marine Bioacoustics Research Collaborative & Scripps Acoustic Ecology, she studies acoustic data from sperm whales, as they can potentially signal greater changes in ecosystems. Meet Natalie here: scripps.ucsd.edu/news/scripps-sโฆ
What does a marine sanctuary sound like? ๐๐ Sanctuaries (NOAA)' new SanctSound web portal allows you to explore the acoustic richness of the underwater world, aka the marine soundscape. Researchers with Scripps Acoustic Ecology & Scripps Marine Bioacoustics Research Collaborative contributed to the project: sanctsound.portal.axds.co/#
It's Happening TODAY!!!! The 2022 Seatech Symposium is this afternoon Scripps Institution of Oceanography! 2:30 - 4 pm PST in Sumner Auditorium Students will share exciting & important results on acoustic behavior of humpbacks, sperm whales, narwhals, Pacific white-sided and Risso's dolphins.
Following our first video on how we estimate animal density from passive acoustic recordings, here's a #scicomm video explaining how cue rates for passive acoustic density estimation are important! youtube.com/watch?v=iOX2Y1โฆ Video produced by Maria Zacarias
Announcing the first seminar of 2023! Next week we'll hear all about the neurogenetics and ecology of cetacean vocal behavior from speakers Brigid Maloney (@BrigidMaloney) and Natalie Posdaljian (Natalie Posdaljian) ๐ณ ๐๏ธ January 9th 18:00 CET โ Register: bit.ly/3ClW31w
