G. Buffon in ‘Variety of Human Species’: The Blacks of Gorée Island & Cape Verde coast are well-built & very dark. They value their color which is indeed a deep and brilliant ebony black, so highly that they despise others who are not so dark, just as Whites despise the swarthy.
