Excited to begin this PL with teachers from across Shanghai and Beijing at Shanghai American School. Lots of practical ideas to share and discussions to be had.

Tom Bennett OBE For me, the issue that needs to be addressed is, given the teachers we have, what kind of professional development will be of most benefit to students? From the research that I've seen, PD addressing pedagogy is likely to have a greater impact than PD addressing subject knowledge

Pleasure to work with the MY Science team at Shanghai AS. We explored strategies for continuous assessment, conceptual understanding, and agency. Investigated engagements that are evolving assessment tools, enabling students to document and reflect on their growing understanding.

Yesterday I connected with teachers from NMAJS and DAIS in Mumbai where we focussed on the importance of differentiation. The best way for teachers to understand differentiation is to provide experiences and strategies in the workshop that are differentiated.

Humbled for "Leveraging Deep Learning" to be mentioned by Kath Murdoch in her "Staying Curious" newsletter. If you want to better understand how to assess conceptual understanding and involve students in the process do get yourself a copy at this link. shorturl.at/dwk4W

In her latest blog, @kjinquiry reminds us that real professional learning lives in the classroom—through inquiry, reflection, and connection. A powerful call to embrace curiosity, care, and craft in our teaching. Thank you, Kath. shorturl.at/fPq1Q

Re-reading Teaching for Understanding by David Perkins reminds me: real learning isn't about recall—it's about reasoning, relevance, and transfer. Students do the thinking. Teachers create the context. A shift from coverage to connection. #DeepLearning #ConceptsInAction

Moving from topic-based teaching to concept-driven learning helps students transfer understanding across subjects. Concepts build depth, invite connections, and support real-world application. It’s not just what they know—it’s what they can do with it. #ConcetpsInAction

Loved working with the TES Middle Years team on concept-based learning. Flora took the ideas and brought them to life through a “Concept Wall”—a living gallery of student thinking and expression. “A Garden of Ideas…” See her words below. #conceptsinaction #impactfullearning

I’m continually puzzled by programs that make encoding a prerequisite for composing. Instead, we should take a parallel approach where we teach composition and conventions next to each other. Without this we miss the compositional thinking of children when they are making books.

Great week with the PYP team at Neev Academy reimagining units of inquiry through stronger lines of inquiry—broad, concept-driven, and open to student voice. When teachers are inspired, student learning deepens. #IBPYP #InquiryLearning #ConceptsInAction #StudentAgency

A great week with the PYP team at Neev Academy! We explored how planning with students, not for them shifts the focus to thinking, questioning, and deep understanding. When planning is responsive, learning becomes meaningful. #IBPYP #InquiryLearning #conceptsinaction

Teachers can spend hours writing report cards but with real-time updates, student reflections, and ongoing communication, are they still necessary? Maybe it’s time to rethink reporting: from static summaries to growth-focused storytelling. What are schools using instead?
