Yesterday, the pre-conference session of the "Journalism Across Borders" conference ended with a nice get-together dinner at Haus am See, Ilmenau. Scholars and students from different parts of the globe are attending the conference. #journalismacrossborders

In the first roundtable discussion, we heard different perspectives on conceptualizing cross-border journalism. Herman Wasserman from the University of Cape Town said that we have to consider "whose and what borders"are crossed in transnational journalism. #journalismacrossborders

The director of the Singapore Internet Research Centre at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication said: “You need cross border journalism, otherwise you aren´t getting the full picture.” Thank you Penghwa Ang for giving a legal and ethical perspective on #journalismacrossborders

Our guests discussed the influence of transnationalization on cross-border journalism, and vice versa. Carola Richter (Free University of Berlin) said that the political structures should be emphasized in discussing cross-border journalism. #journalismacrossborders

Yesterday`s conference day ended with two business meetings and a visit to the virtual reality lab of TU Ilmenau. There they got the chance to experience the VR project "Fear of public speaking". #journalismacrossborders

Our keynote speaker David Weaver, one of the best-known american journalism researchers, was speaking about the challenges of studying journalists across national borders emphasizing the value of independent journalism. #journalismacrossborders

A big question discussed at the last round table was how to define journalism. @THanitzsch from the LMU in Munich gives us further food for thought with his personal mantra: "Collaboration is key". #journalismacrossborders
