#Biafra was founded in 1967 after the 1966 anti-Igbo pogroms. 30,000 people of the Igbo ethnic group had been massacred, hundreds of thousands maimed, and a million fled their homes. Facing genocide, they declared independence and created Biafra in southern Nigeria. 🧵

The Biafrans were excited about their independence. Some countries recognized them as a new country. They even issued their own currency. A people had triumphed over genocide to control their own destiny. 🧵

Nigeria soon invaded #Biafra. Despite being outgunned and outnumbered, Biafra was initially victorious. They made weapons, and even had an air force and navy. Some Europeans joined as freedom fighters in the Biafra military. Nigeria was unable to win on the battlefield. 🧵

So Nigeria imposed a blockade on #Biafra for 2.5 years. They used hunger as a weapon. 2 million Biafrans died of starvation. 1.5 million were children. Many who survived had long-lasting health effects, especially those born during the famine. The world was outraged. 🧵
