To understand the glaciers holding back meters of sea level rise, climate scientists swoop in to extract ice from Antarctica’s remote west coast. #LongReads scim.ag/6E5
A broader Q about our Antarctic ice core collaboration, featured in Science Magazine, is why can US scientists only conduct helicopter-supported glacier research from a South Korean icebreaker? 🚁🚢 The partnership enables science we can't do with US Antarctic resources alone.
I had a great first visit to NSF_ICF last week! I went with Liam Kirkpatrick and Fairuz Ishraque to help unpack the ice drilled during the '23-'24 Center for Oldest Ice Exploration field season. We had a blast with the wonderful staff at ICF and I learned lots about the logistics supporting my work.
Heat from El Niño can warm oceans off West Antarctica – and melt floating ice shelves from below 🇦🇶🧊📈 theconversation.com/heat-from-el-n… via The Conversation - Australia + New Zealand
🧐What's an ice core? How do we drill ice in🇦🇶? Why & how do we study them? What can ice tell us about climate?
DEEPICE students answer all these questions in our 3mn-videos designed as an educational resource for high school students, teachers & general public #ClimateEducation
Shravan is a talent to watch! It’s been fun working with him as a key Center for Oldest Ice Exploration team member!
The library at British Antarctic Survey 🐧 is a special place. You can stumble across a copy of Ed Waddington's thesis from 1981 in the stacks. Casually thumbing through, you realise the first reference is to Lord of the Rings.
Brilliant new postdoc opportunity available at Geography at Durham using marine sediment cores to reconstruct Greenland Ice Sheet-ocean interaction during the last deglaciation (with an opportunity to join the RRS Sir David Attenborough!). Find out more here 👇 durham.taleo.net/careersection/…
'One Ship Problem' is not unique to Australia; it comes up pretty much every time someone yeets a 600-page list of requirements in our general direction. However, at that point we are rarely in a position to question the client's operational concept.🧵

Although Nuyina is a magnificent #icebreaking research and supply vessel, in hindsight having two smaller ships could have been smarter: one dedicated for scientific research at sea and the other for transporting cargo and personnel to Antarctic bases. abc.net.au/news/2024-04-0…
