The Finnish land sink has dropped to zero in 10 years! "The honest fact is that according to the current forecast models, the land use sector sink will only recover sufficiently if the level of logging falls significantly" says the Environment Minister! yle.fi/a/74-20096732

This green area is the Boreal Forest. It is either burning, eaten by beetles enjoying warm temps, or sinking in the quicksand of melting permafrost. This, and the Amazon, were the last big forests where at least some of our emissions could be absorbed. We’re done here💀

“In a time when climate change continues to accelerate, yet climate action is deprioritised in many countries, science must remind societies that climate change is not going away and the time to act is now.” - Werner Kutsch, Director General ICOS ERIC. Happy #ICOS2024SC !

At #ICOS2024SC, Pablo Trucco-Pignata presents a vision for the monitoring, reporting & verification (MRV) of marine-based carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The goal is that this MRV system should be satisfactory, yet achievable. mCDR is not a substitute for emission reductions.

Last day of #ICOS2024SC is kicking off strong with Andrés Tangarife-Escobar from @Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry giving a great overview of carbon cycling in a forest ecosystem. (Data collected at Svartberget ICOS station ICOS Sweden 😍) Most new C incorporated in biomass (🌲🍂🍄), not mineral soil.
