#DYK strong winds in the #Antarctic contribute to shaping sea ice by influencing its drift and thickness❓ #CopernicusMarine provides #OpenData on winds & #SeaIce, providing insight into how these variables interact, which helps to track ongoing changes in the region 🧊

Very happy to share our pre-print paper "Safeguarding the polar regions from dangerous geoengineering". This field is advancing very fast, funded by big money; here is some scientific objectivity and a serious reality check.

Today's #Sentinel3 image of #iceberg #A23a on its approach to South Georgia. At present, the berg is heading straight for the territory, but we know the water current veers southeast when it encounters the continental shelf, so we expect A23a to make a sharp turn, too.

Iceberg A23a viewed from Sentinel-3 yesterday. Glorious view. Distance to South Georgia is now just over 200km. Notice the armada of growlers and bergy bits leading in front of A23a. The current should turn at the continental shelf, which extends about 50km offshore.

Fantastic to see the Environmental Audit Committee has released their report on the UK and the Antarctic environment, featuring evidence from CPOM and colleagues across the Polar Science community. It's vital to protect the polar regions and this report highlights many of the reasons why 👇
