Please remember the rule, folks: Some summers are hotter than others, but every summer is now warmer than if the same weather patterns happened decades ago. The summer of 2024 was still warmer than the vast majority of the summers of Julia's childhood.

The N. Atlantic had one of the largest negative sea-level pressure anomalies in the planet in Jun-Aug 2024. This was associated with unusually strong westerlies & an amplified temp contrast between NE Canada/Greenland & the mid-N. Atlantic. It had a cooling effect on NW Europe.

Until this heatwave... Sweden 🇸🇪 and Norway 🇳🇴 had never hit > 30 °C in September. New national records have been set and by huge margin. Extraordinary weather pattern in Europe right now. THREAD

Great and unusual satellite imagery this morning. Cut off, almost stationary low pressure system centred in the Bay of Biscay. Spinning bands of heavy rain and thunderstorms towards southern England. Also pulling in very warm air westwards.

Rainfall totals since yesterday. Unusual to see such widespread large totals over lowland southern England. 40-50mm very widely. Average total September rainfall around 60mm here. Quite a bit more to come over next few days.

Cut-off low will drift into the Southern UK during late tomorrow into Sunday. Steep lapse rates will help to create enough instability for widespread showers and thunderstorms through the evening.

A shortwave trough embedded in the cut off low is now visible on WV satellite imagery, initiating thunderstorms in Northern France now. GFS has this swinging NE this evening into the South by midnight. Likely to bring a band of thunderstorms morphing into heavy rain by Sunday.

Yesterday had a mean CET of 19.7°C, making it the 3rd warmest on record for the date behind only 2023 & 1898 This will also likely be the 4th Sep in a row to have the first week of the month in the 17s or above (‘only’ 26 Seps have done this since 1772, including these 4)
