Sometimes I get so buried in work, I don't take time to smell the roses. So I just took a couple of minutes to enjoy this Filinia novaezealandiae carrying a diapausing egg. The algae, Ceratium, next to it. #rotifers

New paper: In mesocosms, common bully and Gambusia both reduced crustacean abundances, allowing rotifers to reach numerical dominance. In contrast, zooplankton assemblages in the control mesocosms (without fish) became dominated by cladocerans. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

I'm still on the search for a potential PhD student to join our group - especially someone with a strong background in behavioural ecology. Would appreciate a retweet :)

While watching the 1980 movie The Blue Lagoon, herpetologist John Gibbons from the Uni of the South Pacific realised that the iguanas in the film were not a described species. He visited the Fiji Island where the movie was filmed, Nanuya Levu, and described the species.

The rotifer Epiphanes macrourus from one of my samples today. A massive egg on the back, which will hatch into a genetically identical daughter.

More zooplankton popping up in pop culture. I'm making my way through the X Files, and here some alien cells are mixed with Fetal Bovine Serum, causing the cells to develop... though they can't identify what into, it's an echinoderm larvae!

New paper: MSc student Gaby examined the zooplankton of largely ignored small coastal salt influenced ponds. Salinity, influenced by rainfall, was important. Gaby did an amazing job dealing with the challenges of COVID lockdown disruptions throughout this! doi.org/10.1016/j.ecss…

Distracted from the neglected free-living microfauna, here is a new one on the neglected parasitic microfauna. Most fun result: female Gambusia, which are large, have way more monogeneans than males, which are small. link.springer.com/article/10.100…

This is one of the reasons Cricket World Cups are so great! USA in their 1st T20 World Cup, in their 1st 2 games have beaten Canada and tied with Pakistan, taking the 2 points after winning the Super Over. They came into the tournament after a 2-1 series victory over Bangladesh.

All hell breaks loose with teaching next week, so I thought I should publish a garden history blog before I run out of time to do anything... so here is the history of the tree tomato (aka Tamarillo) in New Zealand. Who imported it first, and where did it get its name?
