Brené Brown said that not being able to dance how we really want to in public is because of self consciousness and that it's rooted in our fear of others ridiculing or shaming us. I think about that when I cringe at people who have the liver to show up as themselves like this.

When I feel someone is doing too much, the embarrassment/shame I start to feel belongs to me. Not to them. The same way the embarrassment others have when I'm doing too much by their own standards also belongs to them, not me. Who made me the SI unit for others? Or others for me?

Not wanting to for ourselves because that's how we like to express ourselves is one thing. People are different and we're not all going to be expressive the exact same way. It's our desire to regulate others, sometimes using shame. It's a reflection of our own internal state.

Because they're showing up in the world as themselves. Why does it make us uncomfortable. Why are we unable to handle that discomfort. Why do we require them to be different? Those are questions to ask ourselves. (that I'm asking myself too because I also feel some type of way)

Saw a tweet about the homogenization of romance. How all marriage proposals + Valentine’s Day look the same because of social media. Which brings back my thought that most desires are created. And SM has put people out of touch with their personal desires in everything.

I spend a lot of time asking myself what do I want? Why do I want the things I think I want? What made me happy? What brought me pleasure? What made me feel small? What did I think would make me happy that only left me feeling discontent? What made me feel like an imposter?

I have found myself coveting what someone else had materially or relationally only to realize what I really wanted that I didn’t have was feeling sure about myself and the direction of my life. What I really wanted was not to feel the weight of my own insecurities.

I’m happy to see so many people resonating with wanting to take their desires back from capitalism + influencer culture. May you know yourself intimately. May you know the joy of a lover learning you and enthusiastically responding to your desires. All we get is this one life.
