"It’s not clear to me how you would ever build an LNG carrier in the US...LNG ships are some of the most complex ships you can construct anywhere under any circumstances. The challenges around that are going to be phenomenal."

"We’ve done a back-of-the envelope look at this. A US-built LNG carrier, if you could do it at all, would be two to four times as expensive as one built in a Korean yard — and those are $260m a pop. So, the economics look quite unfavourable, and that’s an understatement.”

"Unless and until their immediate periphery is secured, I don't think there's strategic scope for China to entertain the idea of extending itself [militarily] far beyond the Western Pacific." Will China's out-of-area military presence resemble that of the 20th-century U.S.?

"I don't think bases are going to go away anytime soon," says Andrew Yeo. "But how we reconfigure force posture - I think that's what may change." See the full episode of #TheWorldUnpacked with Andrew, Isaac B. Kardon, and Ashley J. Tellis here: youtube.com/watch?v=9Uv5FY…

Disputes over South & East China Sea islands share similar logic and WWII historical DNA with dispute over Taiwan. Key dynamic in each is the role of third countries. They have agency & interests—and are likely triggers for a maritime crisis that could escalate to US-China war.
