You can interpolate between the unit circle and hyperbola using (e.g.) cos(θ) to switch the sign in the implicit equation. This can be interpreted geometrically as the intersection of a one-sheet hyperboloid and a plane, with normal rotated θ/2 from the axis. I think it's cute.
