Does anyone know of a study comparing phylogenetic distance between bacterial phyla and phyla of eukaryotes? In other words, proteobacteria are as different to Bacillota as plants are to โ€ฆ?

Coral reef colleagues! Is anyone aware of any studies that have examined the abundance of pelagic, free-living zooxanthellae around coral reefs over a seasonal cycle? Iโ€™m very curious if there are times of year when they become more or less abundant.

Finally out and open access! In this review we reflect on the sea star wasting investigation in 2013, what went wrong and how it informed later work on Diadema. Some interesting new info on ciliates in sea stars as well! annualreviews.org/content/journaโ€ฆ

Any ocean scientists attending #ASLO2025 in Charlotte that would like to participate in a panel on best practices and lost sample stories as part of Town Hall-04 Sunday night? It overlaps with the Rainbow Reception and the conference dinner, but if youโ€™re interested let me know!

๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿฆ  Excited to share our latest findings on Diadema antillarum scuticociliatosis! Our research reveals how sympatric habitats serve as reservoirs for the pathogenic ciliate. We also explore possibilities for resurgence and associated microbes. int-res.com/abstracts/mepsโ€ฆ

Fantastic work by Brayan Vilanova Cuevas examining how Diadema scuticociliatosis shapes microbiomes! Also a reminder that proactive surveillance of microbiomes can be valuable if and when diseases occur.

Concluding 2 back to back meetings (ASLO and BEM), what an amazing group of talks and awesome to catch the latest and greatest! Buoys my heart to see so many early career researchers doing amazing things, despite whatโ€™s going on. Marine disease research is in good hands.
