You’d be hard pushed to say England are among the World Cup favourites at this stage. Tuchel yet to stamp an identity on this team.

Tuesday match for England quite significant as friendlies go. Good to play a decent team who might give Tuchel a clue as to what his defence is like. Learning nothing in last 3 games.

Superb comeback from Wales in Belgium - but at 3-3 with 88 mins on clock , how did they have no defender in the same postal district as De Bruyne for the winner ? Threw it all away.

Senegal have done England a favour. Deserved the win and exposed defensive shortcomings, which softer opponents could never do. Best to find out now than at World Cup. Having said that, decision to rule out Bellingham goal is one of the daftest I have ever seen.

Amid all the inquests and doom about that England loss, there was a quite interesting 10-15 mins of slicker attacking work with Gibbs-White, Rogers, Eze and Madueke , Bellingham all on the pitch together and developing a chemistry. Defence is a worry.

Clearly Ivan Toney did not impress in training. Tuchel refused to talk about him pre-match in press conference and even with his side trailing , left him on bench for 87 minutes. Quite pointed. Will be a shock if he is picked next time

Does this unexpected South Africa run chase indicate that perhaps this brilliant Aussie attack is maybe just losing a little potency ? Interesting debate with Ashes approaching. Suspect too early to write them off, especially as Cummins had six wickets on Thursday.

i’ve seen Pompey linked with Reading’s Charlie Savage. No idea if story has credence. Could do far worse. Lovely left foot pass picker and scores a fair few. Goals from midfield a problem last season for Pompey too.

Have to say playing golf at Oakmont looks like a horrible experience. There’s a difference between making it a proper test and plain unfair. Members there have my utmost sympathy.

So India admit they would have bowled first too if they’d won the toss. And they’d have been as wrong as England were. Sunny day. Blameless track. Bat.

How very sad to hear of the death of Gloucestershire and England fast bowler ‘Syd’ Lawrence at only 61. Sounds like a remarkable man.

Tommy Fleetwood will never have a better chance to win in America. Cruel to say, but he failed the test of nerve. Hard one to get over.

Landmark birthday for my brilliant brother Mike today . In his youth fans would chant ‘ Micky for England’ after one of his 5-goal sprees. Escaped 2000 lbw appeals at cricket. Won 1000 quizzes.

One of the many problems with this Club World Cup is some teams are taking it seriously, others don’t care much. . So can the winners call themselves genuine world champions ? The champions of Italy, Spain and England aren’t there. What does it all mean ?
