It is easy to confuse the animal on the left with a chubby prairie dog, shown on the right. But it’s a California ground squirrel, or ‘rock squirrel’ as we call them in Utah. Rock squirrels have greyish mottled fur, with long fluffy tails. Prairie dogs have tiny not-fluffy tails.
