Recent research shows that chronic neuro-inflammation may affect brain physiology. This Review explores mechanisms underlying the effects of a high-fat diet on chronic inflammation & brain physiology and the role of modulating gut microbiota in depression ow.ly/GyS730mCKaB

So excited to be learning about how neuroscience and nutrition science merge via the gut #microbiome from none other than the eminent Professor John F. Cryan #guthealth #gutmicrobiota #neuroscience #nutritionscience

Shift work and frequent jet lag in humans has been linked to the development of insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease and obesity. Mediating these metabolic effects may be the disruption of circadian fluctuations in the #gutmicrobiome bit.ly/2QpIkjs

The fact that we are social animals may be down to the trillions of microbes that live within us. Here's a nice summary of the exciting work of John F. Cryan and Timothy Dinan on how the #microbiome may be important for determining human sociability. goo.gl/T5otdf

Resistant starch, which resists digestion in the small intestine, may be beneficial for cardiometabolic health, as found in animal studies, but it is difficult to estimate intakes of RS in the population 👇 #NSWinter18 @RSMprofs

Resistant starch linked to improved insulin sensitivity in healthy and pre-diabetic humans but not T2D patients. RS impact better on reducing risk than as a treatment. Also, interindividual variability in metabolic response high. #NSWinter18 @RSMprofs #nutrition #health #evidence

Only 4% of women and 13% of men in the UK meet the recommended intake for #dietaryfibre of 30g/day for ❤️. We need to better communicate to the public what dietary fibre is and find ways to effectively change behaviour/attitudes towards fibre #NSWinter18

What a fantastic talk by Wendy Hall on her and @hkalkhatib's work on #sleep duration and diet quality. They found that habitual short sleepers (<7 hrs/night) who received personalised sleep counselling (without dietary advice) had a lower free sugar intake than those who didn't.

Pre-clinical studies show that daily oscillations in microbial metabolite production regulates host the circadian clock in metabolically-active tissues. Disturbances to this diurnal rhythm may lead to obesity, and other metabolic disturbances #microbiome bit.ly/2QpIkjs

Great article in The Guardian by Laura Thomas, Ph.D. RNutr about the lack of evidence supporting the ketone diet for long-term weight loss or athletic performance enhancement in otherwise healthy people. New diet in 2019? Consult a registered nutritionist or dietician bit.ly/2CSx0or

More research showing that genes play a crucial role in determining obesity risk. But how much is down to 'nature' and how much is down to individual differences in lifestyle and gut microbes is still being debated tinyurl.com/yarldgy9 #nutrition #research

I'm quietly optimistic that we as a society are a step closer to reorganising our economy so that it prioritises the health of the planet and its inhabitants over profits. The energy of Extinction Rebellion Global is truly palpable. Exciting. #sustainability #climatechangeprotest
