"A spokeswoman for the Department of Social Services said the city is required to keep a portion of its total 27,000 supportive housing units indefinitely empty for emergency purposes." What? Homelessness is an "emergency." Just offer people apartments. nydailynews.com/news/politics/…

"The city typically also interviews 3 candidates at a time for any given single supportive housing unit vacancy..." The "three interviewees per unit" rule is just a mechanism to allow for creaming and discrimination by supportive housing providers/landlords. It needn't exist.

The City gives full - 100% - say to providers/LLs on which eligible applicants they house. Even when denials are blatant violations of disability laws, the City lets it go, no questions asked. Unless that is dealt with, H-1st will continue to be unnecessarily out of reach.

Another wave of violence against homeless people is terrifying. There are things that Mayor Eric Adams & NYC DSS Commissioner Molly Park could do: 1) Immediately stop sweeps: Sweeps make people more vulnerable to violence. 2) Immediately open single rooms and allow for direct placement into them.

No city/government/community has ever ended homelessness this way, police-first. Decades of research show this is the wrong approach.

Yes, as Picture the Homeless, VOCAL-NY, us, and many others have repeatedly pointed out - access to public bathrooms is largely non-existent in NYC. People need to go to the bathroom - give them options.
