Your reminder that in spite of the great work that Babel: The Language Magazine Linguistics at Huddersfield has done and continues to do for the field and the community, they remain faced with redundancy. Good of Sir Stephen Fry to highlight this after his paper.

So, 33 years to the day (incidentally, exactly half my lifetime) since I arrived as a young academic at what was then Huddersfield Polytechnic, but soon to become University of Huddersfield, the team I spent years working with and building an incredible reputation for Linguistics at Huddersfield 1/

Having made all but one of my colleagues redundant in July 2022, it now seems University of Huddersfield has decided it does need Linguistics after all. What a surprise. If I were looking for a job or a course, such shoddy behaviour from an employer would give me serious pause for thought.
