"Oh you have a debilitating chronic illness that causes lots of pain and discomfort and severely reduces your activity levels.......... ................ Wow, I wish I could lay in bed all day. That's like a constant summer vacation." 🤦🏾‍♀️ #DisabledCompliments

Ableds, here are things that don't make you suddenly not disabled: Being young Being "pretty" Acquiring a disability Not using mobility aids one day Having a disability that varies Doing something one day & not the next Having fun/laughing Existing outside #DisabledCompliments

#WhenICallMyselfDisabled I do so because it’s true, because disability and disabled are the words used in U.S. laws protecting my civil rights, and because it’s an act of resistance against those who think disabled is a bad thing.

#WhenICallMyselfDisabled, it's because I spent years trying to separate my disability from my myself. I hated myself, I hid my problems, and I forced myself to struggle instead of accepting who I am. When I started to called myself disabled, I accepted and loved myself.

Stranger seeing me:”Don’t give up buddy. I know it sucks to be in a wheelchair, but don’t give up. You’ll walk again.” Life as a wheelchair user is not giving up or a surrender. Wheelchairs and mobility aids are not confinement. They are opportunity.

#WhenICallMyselfDisabled it means I have to fight twice as hard, and with a fraction of the energy available to non-disabled people, to have status, voice and participation as an equal citizen

Nobody is perfect, but everybody can be coachable. Our ultimate success is less determined by where we’re at right now and more determined by how much pride and ego we’re willing to give up to learn from others and get where we want to go.

Pondering the theme of belonging today and I keep coming back to a quote I wrote for myself earlier this year: You can’t find the courage to stand out until you know that you fit in.

#Disability Double-Bind: "You can't access this support/service without a diagnosis" "Just because you have a diagnosis doesn't entitle you to support/services"

Sadly I relate to this thread way too much. There needs to be more awareness and support. Quite possibly one of the hardest parts of disability.

Seeing a counselor or therapist doesn’t mean you are weak or selfish. It means you are strong and selfless enough to do what it takes to be the healthiest version of you for the people around you.

Me, leaving my office: I need to remember to do that. I should write it down. Nah, I’ll totally remember it. Also me: Laughs out loud at the idea that I will remember anything for more than 5 min after leaving my office. Also me: Goes back and writes it down.
