Yesterday, I voted no on the ELFA budget bill because - despite its many initiatives - it has failed to deliver any meaningful housing relief to the working people who call New York home, especially in the 51st Assembly District.

added a bit of Julia Salazar's yes vote:

“I believe that every single NYer... deserves the strongest legal rights to stay in their homes. This bill alone, sadly, cannot achieve that. But I will continue to fight until the laws in our state finally do.”

The housing agreement in the FY 2025 budget weakens existing tenant protections while creating a likely unenforceable version of Good Cause Eviction that is full of exceptionally broad carve-outs — effectively returning NY to its 2019 housing market. 🧵

Our statement on Governor Kathy Hochul standing in the way of crucial statewide tenant protections against unfair evictions and unreasonable rent hikes, expanding health insurance for low-income immigrants, and making billionaire New Yorkers pay what they owe in taxes.

“There are millions of tenants in New York State who are struggling under the crushing burden of unaffordable rent. And yet Governor Hochul has decided to cater to the whims of real estate tycoons who see our homes as ATMs, trying to squeeze as much money out of us as possible.”

A budget housing deal will temporarily extend new eviction defenses to certain renters, depending on factors like location, age, ownership and cost. It also allows larger rent increases for stabilized landlords following renovations.

.Governor Kathy Hochul did not solve the housing crisis.

Instead she pushed through a housing deal written by the real estate industry to ensure they keep getting richer off the backs of hardworking tenants.

STATEMENT: Governor Kathy Hochul FAILS TO GOVERN

“Hochul’s touting victory on a budget that continues to allow a NYer to die every 90 mins from a preventable overdose & keep people languishing in shelters & on the street. This isn’t leadership, this is a failure of governing” Jawanza James Williams | He, Him| 🌹

As we all pour over Governor Kathy Hochul's bill:

Remember it was originally a simple, 4-page bill creating a near-universal right to housing stability that millions of renters could exercise.

Now it's a logistical nightmare written in page after page of crisp legalese.

Heastie claims +90% of NYC tenants would have protections after the gutted Good Cause Eviction is passed but that’s demonstrably false.

Unregulated tenants in owner occupied 2-3 unit buildings (which weren’t even covered in the original bill) alone are +10% of rentals.

Also, good cause was supposed to grant tenants without a lease the same protections as those with one. More than 44% of tenants UTA worked with in 2023 don't have a lease. This is just another way to prevent tenants from using/understanding this protection 😡

“It’s a deal essentially written by the real estate industry and would sacrifice tenant rights that are desperately needed across the state, including in Buffalo and Western New York,” said Clarke Gocker, senior director at PUSH Buffalo.
