Our statement on Governor Kathy Hochul standing in the way of crucial statewide tenant protections against unfair evictions and unreasonable rent hikes, expanding health insurance for low-income immigrants, and making billionaire New Yorkers pay what they owe in taxes.

“There are millions of tenants in New York State who are struggling under the crushing burden of unaffordable rent. And yet Governor Hochul has decided to cater to the whims of real estate tycoons who see our homes as ATMs, trying to squeeze as much money out of us as possible.”

A budget housing deal will temporarily extend new eviction defenses to certain renters, depending on factors like location, age, ownership and cost. It also allows larger rent increases for stabilized landlords following renovations.

kathy hochul is on a victory lap patting herself on the back for not raising taxes on her wealthy friends while the budget deal isnt inked yet and there's not a dollar for homeless new yorkers. infuriating

Heastie claims +90% of NYC tenants would have protections after the gutted Good Cause Eviction is passed but that’s demonstrably false.

Unregulated tenants in owner occupied 2-3 unit buildings (which weren’t even covered in the original bill) alone are +10% of rentals.

Also, good cause was supposed to grant tenants without a lease the same protections as those with one. More than 44% of tenants UTA worked with in 2023 don't have a lease. This is just another way to prevent tenants from using/understanding this protection 😡

“It’s a deal essentially written by the real estate industry and would sacrifice tenant rights that are desperately needed across the state, including in Buffalo and Western New York,” said Clarke Gocker, senior director at PUSH Buffalo.
