A peek into 1980’s Holloway. The long established Jones Brothers (now Waitrose) lives out its final years next to Sainsbury’s (now Argus).

A couple get ready to head to Holloway in the 1960’s pictured just south of Archway Bridge (2 minutes east of ‘Archway Tower’ today), the light traffic is in contrast to the traffic today. I wonder where they’re heading?

A hazy view of the Marlborough Theatre in the early 1900’s. The building to the right would today be what was once the Big Red Pub. The theater itself sits in what is the City & Islington college next door.

A very old picture of the Archway Tavern from the late 1800’s, if taking this picture today the ‘Archway Tower’ would be just behind us. No doubt the horse pulled bus is on its way to Holloway from Highgate Hill.

1950’s Holloway Road, looking North outside what would be Iceland today. It’s always interesting to zoom into these photos to explore the multiple narratives on display.

Inside the Odeon (then named the Gaumont) soon after opening its doors in the 1930’s. While the Odeon has gone through many refurbishments you may catch glimpses of this view the next time you’re in one its larger screens today.

Opened 1910 as the Pavilion Cinema & converted to the Gresham Ballroom in 1957 it holds a place in London Irish hearts. Closed 1998 a Sainsbury local now occupies the spot, next time youre in listen close, u can just about hear the melodies of Joe Dolan & Big Tom gracing the air

Jumping on a tram in the 1950’s outside of where the Archway Tower is today. To the left of the photo is the Archway Tavern, in the far distance St John’s Church in upper Holloway can be seen.

Rod Stewart, born 1945 has a long connection with Holloway. His mum lived her life in Upper Holloway before Rod himself was born & raised in Archway, attending school in Hornsey. His parents today are buried at Highgate Cemetery where Rod will no doubt return to rest one day.

Joe Meek (between the cops) was a musical legend & pioneer. A plague is visible today at his former residence, 304 Holloway Rd. He turned down work with the Beatles (who he described as ‘noise’), Bowie, Stewart & more. The proclaimed genius ended his own life at the same address.

One of the earliest photos of Archway (‘suicide’) bridge. Constructed to connect Highgate to Hornsey, the longest road in the UK, influenced by the romans ran beaneth it. Taverns such as the Archway Tavern were a popular place at its base as Londoners headed out to the country.

An artists impression of Holloway in the late 1800’s. To the right is the Royal Northern Hospital circa 1888, pivotal to WW1 efforts. Today in Manor Gardens you will find a memorial to the fallen soldiers of WW1 affixed to the archway of where the injured soldiers used to enter.

Post war Sainsbury’s in lower Holloway, today the actual location today would be opposite St. Mary Magdalenes church, 18-20 Holloway Rd. This retail store was one of their earliest prior to national high street dominance.

Looking south towards the Nags Head in 1875, it was this decade in which Holloway truly expanded. If replicating this photo today you would be standing at the bus stop outside of the Odean looking south down Holloway.

One of the most infamous killers in UK history the American Dr Crippen murdered his wife Cora Crippen in 1910 at their home in Hilldrop Crescent, Holloway. He poisoned & buried her corpse in the cellar at number 39. Or did he? Recent DNA evidence has cast doubt on his guilt
