Triggered by a question: if you have published in SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE or EDBT, you are a DB person. PLDI, POPL, ASPLOS, CC or CGO make you a compiler person. If you are either and looking for a postdoc position, apply! (SOSP/OSDI-crowd welcome too): imperial.ac.uk/jobs/descripti…

In Memoriam Prof. Dr. M.L. (Martin) Kersten (1953-2022), fellow of CWI and emeritus professor of computer science at the University of Amsterdam. Sadly, he passed away on July 6, 2022. cwi.nl/news/2022/in-m… MonetDB Team CWI DA

Martin embodied the idea of “going to the moon, not because it is easy but because it is hard.” A natural scientist: curious, persistent and just the right amount of whacky. A great loss for data management research.

I am perplexed and saddened that at a time when eco-friendly traveling is more important than ever and Germany is governed by red, green and yellow parties, German trains (Deutsche Bahn Personenverkehr) have become an embarrassment. I think ministers need to stop flying domestically.
