Field work to study flooding impacts on plastic litter in urban streams. Marking reaches, finding ironic trash, a beautiful day & positive team. Now with safety vests, which benefits all. Bailey Schwenk, Liz Kazmierczak, & look at the technique from Helena Guasch.

Chicago folks & others: there are now floating walkways and gardens on the Chicago River at Goose Island. Its spectacular! Congrats to Urban Rivers on the vision to create a spot for learning, beauty, & community where so many couldn't. Check out & support: urbanriv.org

Thurs 7/21 from 12:30-1:30pm we will be hosting a free Panel Discussion on our plaza about plastic pollution. Joining the discussion is MWRD Commissioner Kimberly Du Buclet as moderator. Panel consists of Loyola University Chicago Shedd Aquarium and Friends of the Chicago River experts! Join us!

Grateful to have Helena Guasch Helena Guasch as a visiting scholar to Loyola University Chicago this summer. Learning together about trash, #microplastics, and storms in urban streams. Also some Catalan food 😃

Our work on #plastic biofilms in streams - bacteria, algae, and fungi over several weeks of succession. A little variation across substrates, but time drove similar changes in assemblages on all types. Thanks to efforts of industrious post-docs Adit Chaudhary & @dunn_sam 🙌

“This project is about a place of healing right in the center of our city—for our communities and our river. It’s an optimistic example of what’s possible through unique, ever-evolving collaboration.” Read more on the Wild Mile in #Chicago in Architectural Record: bit.ly/3p6M1dD

Trash in rivers is alarming, dangerous, & sometimes, funny. Magnet fishing is 1 of many ways to connect with rivers. Our urban rivers have much to teach us. They concentrate & reflect back to us our system of values. Let’s keep learning. Thanks Amanda Holpuch for the ecological view 😃

Thanks to Rebecca Redelmeier at the The Verge for covering all the great work on #plasticpollution, including #TrashTrapping along the Great Lakes. w/ Ocean Conservancy, PortsToronto, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Swim Drink Fish, Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup and Timothy Hoellein theverge.com/2022/10/14/234…

Loren Hou shawn martinez's new paper: How long are microplastic fibers in round goby guts? ~18-24 hrs. Gobies are benthic & territorial, so we estimated how much they excrete on an areal (m2) basis: alot! One small piece towards a plastic budget. Open access: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

Sierra Club joined a press conference w/ IEC, Illinois PIRG, Alliance for the Great Lakes, Environment Illinois, & FaithinPlaceAction today to call on the Illinois General Assembly to pass legislation (HB2376) that phases out single-use foam food ware! #CPRLD23

Great news for the Great Lakes! They have been named the first freshwater Hope Spot by Mission Blue. Hope Spots are special places across the globe that are recognized as scientifically critical to our ocean's health and designated for protection. (1/4)
