So you want to work on Generative AI! Lots of amazing teams are hiring, but there's a lot of hype and noise right now, and it can be tough to find the good ones.

🚩Here are a few red/yellow flags to look for that indicate that a company doesn't know what they're talking about:

1) They over-emphasize prompt engineering.

Prompting is a side-effect of the nature of the current models and the underlying data. The particular skill to prompt one model may not transfer, and definitely won't from 2023 to 2024.

2) They under-emphasize software engineering.

You don’t build a product in the ChatGPT playground, you build it in source code, with a team, and via engineering process.

3) They don't talk about safety, control, and bias.

It is very possible to build a good product with ML. It is not possible to do so without considering how ML systems can magnify bias, risk safety, and don't have control built-in.

4) They talk about 'the AI' as if it's ... one thing.

There are proven machine learning techniques that do many tasks more cheaply, accurately, and often with interpretability.

You want the simplest possible thing that will suffice. Not AI for the sake of AI.
