Outside of the #McGill encampment, campus life seems to carry on. One man snapped a picture of the camp yesterday and turned to his friend, "Sorry to be political, but this is a cause I beleive in." One student passed a $20 bill to organizers, said nothing, and walked away.

One student protester, who wouldn't give his name yesterday but is a #McGill undergraduate student, said the students will not leave until McGill and #Concordia divest from businesses with ties to Israel. He said he would be willing to be expelled or arrested for for this cause.

Roddick Gates at McGill University are closed, separating pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian protesters. "Shame," says a speaker on Sherbrooke. "McGill has become a breeding ground of antisemitism." #StudentProtests

Facing Sherbrooke is a line of pro-Palestinian protesters including members of Montreal's Hasidic Jew community. Some protesters are doing Muslim prayer on the front lawn. #Montreal #McGill mcgill #StudentProtests

Campus protests. GOOD: mostly peaceful calls to use non-violence for Palestinian freedom and dignity. AMBIGUOUS: River/sea and globalize/intifada slogans. BAD: calling for Jews to go back to Europe; calling for resistance by any means possible. Need a single standard.

This is a full circle moment to be in conversation with University Affairs where my earliest ideas for hope circuits found an emerging, wobbly voice under the care of long-time editor Leo Charbonneau. "Other countries are also seeing increased political interference in academia." nature.com/articles/d4158… Like a provincial government party hosting an event that encourages & celebrates the harassment & defamation of academics, physicians, & public health officials? Sigh.

NEW - Ontario is using more power today than it has on any other day in the last 10 years, Minister Lecce tells me. However he says there’s no risk of blackouts or brownouts. The province is importing an unspecified amount of electricity from other jurisdictions to meet demand.
