One can quantify diversity of a sample by the number of species found (species richness). But this is a poor metric for diversity. Often we are interested in the diversity of ecological function, but for this we need to quantify the functional differences between species.

In many cases we don't know the properties of the species, so all we have to work with are their abundances in different samples. A crude idea is that species that occur together must also be similar -- there are many ecological problems with this, but we can fix them ...

The planned TA project SITES AquaNet is a follow-up to the experiment I participated in this summer in Sweden. By simulating the same run-off scenarios in spring 2023, the upcoming experiment enables a comparison between seasons and different starting communities.
