The number of filled jobs has fallen by 25,000, or about 1%, in the past year, with 10,000 jobs lost in Auckland. The construction sector has accounted for the bulk of the job losses - down by 10,000, or 5%. Back on track eh Christopher Luxon ya muppet?

Almost 200 construction firms went into liquidation in Q3 of 2024, driving (along with hospitality closures) a 10% increase in liquidations overall, rising to the highest level in ten years.

The number of building consents is now around 2,900 a month, having fallen rapidly from a peak of 4,500 a month in mid 2022. However, non-residential construction consents are still falling, with $9.1b in work consented in the year to September, down 6.4%.

Unemployment is projected to continue to rise on the back of the softening labour market, the number of people receiving main benefits has risen to nearly 400,000 and is at its highest proportion of the working age population since the Global Financial Crisis.
