Tierversuchsgegner haben recht erfolgreich eine Behauptung etabliert: Tierversuche seien wissenschaftlicher Unsinn und nicht notwendig für die Forschung. Klar, würde das stimmen, müsste man Tierversuche sofort abschaffen. Nur stimmt das nicht.

Die Bedeutung von Tierversuchen für die Forschung ist unumstritten. Würden wir auf Tierversuche verzichten, müssten wir in Kauf nehmen, dass wir z.B. in der Alzheimer- oder Krebsforschung den Fortschritt signifikant verlangsamen oder sogar ganz stoppen würden.

Das Ergebnis aus einem Mausexperiment lässt sich noch lange nicht auf den Menschen übertragen. Aber es legt einen wichtigen, oft unverzichtbaren Baustein auf dem langen Weg bis zu einem potentiellen Erfolg. Kaum ein medizinischer Durchbruch kam ohne Tierversuche aus.

Wie kann in der Forschung Tierleid minimiert und Erkenntnisgewinn maximiert werden? Innerhalb der Wissenschaft wird das intensiv diskutiert. Aber in der öffentlichen Debatte werden solche wichtigen Fragen begraben unter dem “Tierversuche sind sinnlos”-Scheinargument.
