A1 Thx for inviting me. I have worked as a research data scientist a Digital Science for 1 year. I do analyses, machine learning and visualisations. I got a PhD in LondonMet & a postdoc in Copenhagen Uni where I discovered python, got hooked & side-tracked out of academia #altmetchat

A2 I'm working on Dimensions and Altmetric data to compare the impact of OA articles and non-OA. I'm also diving into Altmetric data for our next Digital Research Report, where we analyse the network of attentions (news, tweet, policy, ..) in some specific areas #altmetchat

A3 I started with a geographic sciences degree making maps. I have always been visual, so I love making graphs static or dynamic to express what I want to say. My PhD acknowledgment was a map! #altmetchat helenedraux.net/2013/07/29/ack…

A4 I've always thought visualizations improved communication. Although cultural, visualisations transcend languages. Sometimes you just need a colour to imply a concept (please, no pink for women!) or a line to convey a trend #altmetchat

A5.1 Each project is indeed different, especially in research projects. In analytics for instance, I usually do something simple (e.g. a bar chart) and try to interpret it. It helps me focusing on the message I want to convey #altmetchat

A5.2 But it's a lot of trial and error. When I block, I go on the Internet to get inspired. I love Mike Bostock work on #d3, or the analyses from Pew Research Center. Sometimes just Google Image! #altmetchat

A6 I was curious to see another side of academia, and I don't regret it. I wanted a place where my work would be valued. I've discovered a lot of amazingly innovative people who are not afraid of trying. That's really exciting! #altmetchat

A7.1 For our Digitial Research Report we're looking at the research on Alzheimer's. My colleague Martin Szomszor found some communities talking about the same research articles. #altmetchat

A7.2 I looked at the twitter conversations and found that only two groups had been talking about a drug that failed clinical trial phase 3 (quite late failure!). The other communities never mentioned it. #altmetchat

A8 Altmetric data is great to show how the general public and specialists talk about research studies. The tracking of policy documents is really powerful too. It gives more context to researchers' work and I think this should be valued #altmetchat

A9.1 Dimensions' power is to show links between grants, articles, clinical trials and patents, while #Altmetric shows the link between research and the public. #altmetchat

A9.2 Both are needed to understand where the money comes from and where it goes to. Research impact is neither solely citations nor attention, we need both, and #Altmetric & Dimensions show it perfectly #altmetchat

A10.1 I've a few projects coming up, working with a data provider to track the use of their data (are they really acknowledged properly?) or a think tank that want to understand the impact of their research. #altmetchat

A10.2 I would love more time to work on Altmetric data. I'm curious to see what happened to the Top100 articles in the past 4 years, or to find a way to extract discussions about research on Twitter. It's great when people talk about research! #altmetchat
