Previously it was thought that mostly the number of clicks and their timing matters. We identify two discrete patterns that we call the a-vowel and the i-vowel. We also observe clear trajectories in formant frequency that we call diphthongs.

We argue that sperm whales actively exchange a-vowels and i-vowels in dialogues. This opens up new potential research (= whale philology) and suggest that sperm whale codas are much more expressive and compositional than previously thought.

The alarming slowdown of the ocean carbon pump shows why we need a global ocean health observing system. SOCCOM Global Ocean Biogeochemistry Array @bgc_argo data are critical to study how climate change is changing the ocean, especially the Southern Ocean. bit.ly/3RH0yvR Science Magazine

Unseasonable warmth in Florida continues. This mornings warm low temperatures were made at least 5X more likely by climate change. Global warming is warming overnight temperatures faster than daytime in part due to warmer ocean temps and extra moisture the air can now hold.

This image is astonishing for both the message it communicates and for its sci comm value. Incredible work by team Copernicus EU It shows global ocean temps for each year since 1940. The alarming, yet brilliant part is the pink shading which highlights the 2023-2024 jump 1/

We’re not where we need to be to protect our ocean and the lives that depend on it. A recent report, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, highlights key actions governments need to take now to protect our ocean. See how we can turn the tide at #COP16.
