I disagree with incarceration being the first thing people jump to when they imagine punishment & accountability, but it should be noted that there are millions of people in jail & prison right now for doing so much less than the people in this white house have done.

After slavery, a new racist idea excused slavery and post-slavery racist policy: without their controlling White masters, Negroes reverted back to their inferior nature. Excusing post-Jim Crow racist policy, Mead is making a similar racist case about freedom. 1890 is 2019.
