1/8 The Leng Review into physician assistants gives a green light for expansion But it fails to answer hospital doctors' serious concerns Positives: ✅Physician assistant title back ✅Limits on seeing undifferentiated patients ✅Says role must be properly defined ❌Negatives:

2/8 The review was commissioned to determine whether physician assistants are safe and effective. The evidence was insufficient on all counts.

3/8 It finds no evidence that physician assistants are cost-effective despite earning more than a doctor with almost a decade’s training. But it proposes an advanced PA role on higher pay.

4/8 It acknowledges overwhelming opposition from hospital doctors to allow physician assistants to prescribe. But it proposes to allow PAs to train to do this.

5/8 It recognises serious concerns among resident doctors about the impact of physician assistants on their training. But it’s beyond the remit of the review.

6/8 It confirms the inappropriate use of physician assistants to plug medical rotas. But it rejects a national scope for PAs.

7/8 It details how thousands of resident doctors can’t get a training place. But it says senior doctors should be dedicating time to training physician assistants.

8/8 Expressing sympathy for the issues raised by hospital doctors means nothing if you don't act on them.
