In Elem. Greek Haverford College Classics Department this morning, we discussed Patrice Rankine's “Black is, black ain’t: (Re)imagining Greece, Rome, and Race through Ralph Ellison, Derek Walcott, Wole Soyinka." #teachancient #ancientgreek

We used some of Dr. Rankine's thought-provoking writing as a jumping-off point to discuss racially charged translations of Greek words (such as Αἰθίοψ), which sit in the dictionary and perpetuate very particular scholarly stances on ancient Greece's relationship with blackness.
