May's Torchic was handled very differently than almost all starters in their first form. May's Torchic got very little screentime, no major battles outside of Team Rocket, and didn't get a Contest at all until it evolved. All it's screentime is as a Combusken in it's middle stage

Kind of surreal to think these two scenes aired literally 20 years apart, 2002-2022. Imagine seeing May for the first time in the year 2002 and then in 2022 after 20 years.

I think the animators had a lot of fun with May's action pokeball throwing shots, and didn't just re-use the same animation sequence each time.
