Today at the HAB our guest tutor was Joost Depuydt from the Museum Plantin-Moretus. We got to see original 16th woodblocks next to the prints that they generated. Amazing to see the two side by side!

Today at Herzog August Bibliothek summer school we learned about relic books from scholar Livia Cárdenas! These books are full of visual data and describe the various relics that were shown to the public on certain liturgical feast days.

Day 8 of Summer School at Herzog August Bibliothek featuring our guest tutor @sietske_fransen! Today’s focus was data and observation. We considered works by Van Leeuwenhoek, Grew, Hooke, and Malpighi. We even got to try out a replica of Van Leeuwenhoek’s microscope!

These busy little bees come from Historia Animalium (History of Animals), produced in Italy in 1595. 🐝 The Renaissance manuscript contains illustrations and descriptions from the Roman natural philosopher Pliny the Elder (23/24–79AD) and Aristotle (384–322BC).

The innovative and, at times, wonderfully surreal engravings from Johann Zahn’s Oculus Artificialis (1685), an early and comprehensive account of the function and usage of a number of optical instruments, including the camera obscura and magic lantern: buff.ly/2mBHRMb

Just when I thought I’d seen it all at the Minnesota State Fair, today I came across a 38-inch green bean that will be competing in the giant vegetable competition. Best of luck and may the best vegetable win!
