Originally, Congress got no salary. they got a per diem to cover expenses when Congress was in session (a part time thing).
Service was designed to be a way for successful citizens could pay back or pay forward their republic and its citizens.

When it's your child tho it's hard to grasp that they could be the outlier...then guilt sets in wondering why you didn't see it in your child...but you would have if they had been an outlier... That means something must be imposed on EVERYONE....whether they need it or not...
