A fantastic few days at the The ESTS 2023 Conference Conference (my first academic conference!!!). I learnt so much - and now I have a solid idea for my diss!

Wandered into the beautiful Church of St Maurice in Lille. With records dating back to the 11th century, the church as we see it today began construction in the 14th century. I was lucky to catch the end of the Sunday mass

The gorgeous Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille Cathedral. I was fascinated by the wall paintings - the colour on them is brilliant. I thought of all the lost medieval wall paintings and how much astonishment those early pilgrims must have felt.

Some wonderful books at the Palais de Beaux Arts, including this sculpted version! All I did when looking at sculptures with engraving was try and discern the script type (David Rundle's palaeography sessions have been paying off!)

Also at the Palais de Beaux Arts was this intriguing lettuce ceramic

Latin in the Wild?

On today's edition of Latin in the wild - a tabernacle from c.1180 from Cologne (museum number 7650-1861, V&A)

A really good scholarship for a fantastic masters. Even if you aren't thinking of doing it this year it's something to keep in mind for the future! So greatful to have been this year's receiver of the scholarship

I need some ideas of things to do around the Charing Cross area on Wednesday - preferably medieval, perhaps stagey (already going to British Museum the day before!). Please do give me some things to do!

In the early tenth century, Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, was said to have placed St Wærburge's remains in a church in the centre of Chester. Wærburge holds a special place in my heart, even if that place has more geese than one would expect
