Sakkara is back in Steingrímsfjörður! Whale Wise spotted the group on Wednesday the 12th and again on the 14th this week 🥳🐋 They seem to enjoy spending time here and were even seen hunting a seal and some ducks!

I just know I won't be able to keep my composure the day I finally see Sakkara. My favourite whale in the whole world.

Three years ago today, I saw orcas in the wild for the very first time, and oh, how emotional it was. I wish I could've told my past self everything that has happened in those three years and seen the look on her face. The beautiful pod of IS170. A very special one, for sure.

A breaching humpback in Hvalfjörður, or in English, "Whalefjord" 🐋 Iconically, it is rare to see whales in this fjord! It actually acquired its name from folklore that told the tale of an evil redheaded whale (illhveli) that terrorised and sunk any ship that crossed its path.

DYK - whales do, in fact, have hair? all cetaceans are born with whisker-like hairs on their rostrum. in most species, these fall off shortly after birth, but the follicles remain visible for the rest of their lives.

rough seas don’t necessarily mean bad sightings! in fact, it’s often the opposite from my experience, whales seem to get extra breach-y when the weather kicks up compared to calmer days. some of the best tours i’ve ever guided were in the rougher conditions!

Ha! This shot made us do a double take. Look closely and you'll find that no seals were harmed in the making of this photograph. 📷: Matt Stolmeier, Outer Island Excursions
