There is much to like in modern science, also in social science. For me, a big disappointment has been to realize how narrowly specialized our fields & incentive structures are. Not much interaction, often living in ignorance about the best work even in neighboring disciplines.

Two days after the US presidential election, it is striking to see on social media how easy it is to predict the future with high accuracy, and even provide detailed mono-causal explanations for why that prediction just had to come true. If you make the prediction in hindsight.

A much needed calming view from our "backyard" at campus this morning, reflecting on the deep uncertainty and difficult times ahead -- for both the US and the world. Collective soul-searching needed.

I am currently writing up a paper testing two hypotheses. We tried it first as a registered report. Rejected because the hypotheses were "too obvious", as they were consistent with existing theory & other findings. Results: One hypothesis supported, precise null for the other.

Interesting replication paper comparing decision market predictions with actual replicability. Successful replication, defined as a statistically significant effect in same direction as the original, was 83% for the top-12 rated findings & 33% for the bottom-12 rated findings.
