Easily recognisable by their striking iridescent blue spots, southern blue devils have become a source of great interest among marine scientists. Using historical photographs, researchers have been able to identify the same fish; track movements, estimate age and home ranges.

The Southern Blue Devil has been found to live for up to 60 years. Their longevity & site attached nature means they play a crucial role in maintaining balance of prey species & food web dynamics over long periods. Thus, their presence may be an indicator of ecosystem health.
