I'm thrilled to receive this award on behalf of the thousands of shantyboat people and roustabouts who shaped the cultural history of the Mississippi River in the era of Mark Twain and well beyond.

This beautiful plaque arrived in today's mail. Several days ago, I tweeted the news about winning the award, but the plaque was a nice surprise. I guess it somehow makes it more official. LSU Press

After my Oct 14th talk at the Cotton & Rural History Conference, Prof Kyle Wilkison, of the Texas Center for Working Class Studies, presented me with the 2021 "Ruth A. Allen Pioneer in Working Class Studies Award." I knew of the award in 2021, but Covid delayed its presentation.

"Hard Times in an American Workhouse," by Gregg Andrews (Dr. G & the Mudcats), is the first comprehensive examination of a U.S. workhouse, combining critical history with the previously forgotten stories of individuals sentenced there. It's #pubday for this important book! bit.ly/hardtimesinana…
